Walter Ralegh was born at Hayes Barton which his father, a churchwarden of East Budleigh, rented from the Duke family.  However, despite several attempts, he was never able to acquire his own birthplace.  On the other hand, the Ralegh family owned the manor of Colaton Raleigh for over 300 years until 1603 when Sir Walter was deprived of his property by James VI.
